Bayu Aquaculture Sdn Bhd has successfully produced four species of Rabbitfish, Siganus javus,
Siganus vermiculatus, Siganus guttatus and Siganus canaliculatus from their hatchery and able to
grow it to table size.Rabbitfish is not new as it is commonly seen swimming inour waters and sold
at markets as well as restaurants. However, all of those offered for sale are caught from the wild.
Promotion of wild caught Rabbitfish would lead to increase in catching effort and this would
not be sustainable.
Bayu Aquaculture Sdn Bhd can now culture and offer Rabbitfish to consumers without stressing
the wild population. Rabbitfish are cultured in suspended cages and fed with quality feed and
supplemented by fresh algae growing inside the cages. The texture for rabbitfish is smooth and
tender and excellent to be eaten with porridge, served as bak kut teh, deep fried or
simply steamed.
Rabbitfish is also commonly called “fa cai yee” in Chinese which literally means “prosperity fish”.
This auspicious name makes Rabbitfish afavourite among Chinese, especially during celebration
of new lunar year.
